THE FINAL PIECE OF THE ROOM MOST PEOPLE LEAVE TOO LATE
When designing a home, most people begin with the exciting parts. Furniture. Lighting. Paint colours. Maybe even artwork. But windows? They usually come last. By the time the room is nearly finished, the windows suddenly become the final piece of the puzzle. That is when many people start looking for curtains or blinds and realise it is not as straightforward as they expected.
In reality, there are two different approaches to window treatments, and both have their place depending on the building and the space.
The first is standard ready-made solutions. When the dimensions are relatively straightforward, ready-made curtains or blinds can be a practical and efficient choice.
The second approach is bespoke window treatments, which are designed specifically for the room. This becomes particularly useful when the architecture is more complex. Ceiling heights vary, bay windows behave differently from flat walls, and large areas of glazing often require very different solutions from traditional sash windows.
Both approaches have their place. The key is understanding the building and choosing the solution that suits it best.
When done well, curtains and blinds do far more than cover a window.
They frame the architecture of the room, soften light, improve acoustics, and add warmth and balance to the overall design. If you look closely at well-designed spaces, you will often notice that window treatments play a quiet but important role. Think of elegant restaurants with long, flowing curtains that create intimacy in the dining room. Or luxury hotels where layered sheers and blackout curtains control the mood from morning to night. These details help shape how a space feels.
In homes, the same principle applies. The right window treatment can make a room feel finished, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed.
WHEN SHOULD YOU START THINKING ABOUT CURTAINS AND BLINDS?
Ideally, window treatments are considered earlier in the design process.
This is especially helpful if:
You are renovating or building a property
Your windows are large, unusual, or architectural
You are considering motorised blinds
You want a layered combination of curtains and blinds
You are working with an interior designer
Thinking about window treatments early allows practical details to be planned properly, such as curtain tracks, recess depth, and how fabrics will fall within the space.
But even if the room is already finished, it is never too late to find the right solution.
HOW TO START AN ENQUIRY WITH SWAG
If you are considering bespoke curtains or blinds, the first step is simply starting a conversation. A few pieces of information can help us understand your project and guide you more effectively.
Property Location: Sharing the property location helps us understand the context of the space. A central London apartment, countryside house, or period townhouse can all have very different considerations when it comes to privacy, light, and materials.
Floor Plans: If you have floor plans or architectural drawings, they are extremely helpful. They allow us to see the layout of the space and how the windows relate to the rest of the room.
Window Measurements: These initial dimensions give us an idea of scale and allow us to advise on suitable curtain or blind styles for your space. If detailed measurements are not yet available, we can guide you on what information will be useful during the early stages of the project.
Curtains, Blinds, or Both: Some clients already know what they want. Others are still deciding between Curtains, Roman blinds, Roller blinds, a combination of both. Layering curtains with blinds is often a popular option, allowing for both privacy and flexible light control throughout the day.
Inspiration images: If you have any ideas or inspiration, feel free to share them. This could be interior design images, fabric references, photos of your current space, or any examples of curtains or blinds you like. These references help us understand the atmosphere you want to create.
NOT SURE WHAT YOU WANT YET?
That is completely normal. Many clients reach out before they have decided on fabrics or styles. Window treatments are often one of the final decisions in a space, and it can take time to figure out what feels right.
